Springtime in Buckeye

March 20th was the First Day of Spring and what better time to prepare your garden than by planting flowers. While we do live in the desert, a typical flower garden isn’t out of the question. There are plenty of options for this harsh climate we live in, all of which are sure to transform your home this spring.

No time like the present…

The official first day of spring was March 20th, but thanks to Arizona’s weather, it feels like spring has already been here for a month. If you’re looking to “grow” your garden, now is the time to take action. Because we have warm weather, and ample sunshine early in the year, planting flowers has never been easier. First you need to determine the site of your flower garden. Make sure you stay away from large trees and bushes, as they’ll steal water and nutrients from your flowers. Next, check the soil and break up any clumps. March is the month that weeds start growing quickly, remember to keep up with this maintenance.

Choosing the Right Flowers

Our warm weather gives us one-of-a-kind flowers that bloom in the early spring, and some all year long. Some of the most popular flowers in our climate are:

The Celosia Spicata is perfect for the desert because it cannot handle cold soil. You’ll see this flower in the desert in colors of red, purple and pinks.

The Cleome Hassleriana is a relatively easy plant, especially for beginners. Known as the spider plant, this flower self-sows for years to come.

The Petunia is a staple in most flower gardens. It can be found in just about every color, which fits with whatever your style may be. Petunias can bloom for an entire season, but it’s important to prevent over watering.

Portulaca or Rose Moss is a popular choice for warmer climates. This petite flower blooms in all colors. Because it doesn’t survive well in humid climates, the desert is the best place to start growing them.

Spring is here, and before we know it our 100 degree days will be knocking on our door. Before the weather gets too unbearable, get outside and start planning your flower garden. Happy Planting and Get Growing!
